Fellowship Spotlight: The SOM Prize and Travel Fellowship for Architecture, Design and Urban Design

Sponsoring Agency: Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Foundation

Description: The SOM Prize in architecture, design and urban design is a $50,000 research and travel fellowship that enables one outstanding student to do in-depth research, collaborate with other designers, and pursue independent study outside the realm of established patterns. In addition to the grand SOM Prize, the Foundation also awards a $20,000 travel fellowship to the second strongest candidate.

Requirements / eligibility:

  • Candidates must have graduated or be graduating between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010 with a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited U.S. school of architecture, urban design or design. Attendance at a U.S. school and graduation a must; U.S. citizenship not required.
  • Candidates should be academically accomplished, demonstrate the highest design aspirations, and intend to enter the professional practice of architecture, design or urban design.

Scholarship Spotlight: United Agribusiness League Scholarship Program

Description: Scholarship for use in any year; not renewable.

Amount of scholarship: up to $25,000

Deadline: March 31, 2010

Requirements / eligibility:
  • Applicants must be affiliated with UAL or UABT, either through a member or an employee of a member
  • This scholarship is open to any major of study
  • Must be presently enrolled anytime during the 2010/2011 scholastic year at an accredited college or university
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA is required to be eligible for a scholarship
  • Three letters of recommendation: one from a teacher, one from an employer and one from a volunteer organization (If you do not work or volunteer, substitute 2 teacher letters)
  • A two-page essay is required; typewritten and double-spaced with a one-page bibliography. The topic for the 2010 essay can be found in the "Scholarship Checklist" section
  • A one-page typed resume of any work, educational, community or extracurricular activities.
